The IC datasheet makes it seem like it encodes the data based off the input from the input from the key pins below it. It's hard to tell which resistor goes to pins 11 and 13 though, since it appears from the layout they are not directly adjacent the pins they are connected to. Assuming it's meant to be in the 915 range it would need to be a on the order or fF, which doesn't seem correct.

If it's 915MHz a full wave antenna would be about 30 cm, anything lower would be even longer.Īs far as the IC, I can't really tell what the intended frequency is because the capacitor used also helps determine that and it's flipped so we can't see the numbers there. If it is an inductor then it's part of a tuner circuit and maybe the piece to the left of it (which looks broken off) could be where the antenna connected. Though if it is being used like an inductor its on the extreme amateur end of parts, though this whole get up doesn't look super professional, so who knows. I could be way off with this, but it looks like the "pen spring" as you call it is in parallel with a capacitor, which makes it appear to be an inductor. For reference the signal looks something like this. If you have a soldering iron and some solid core copper wire (matching the radius of the wire in the coil as best you can) you could try soldering a ~50mm long strand of wire onto the side of the coil with the strand of wire extending into the loop looking trace and then cut it back back by 1mm until it either works or you're out of cable (because math is for the lazy!)įor the modulation your calculation is likely spot on! However, there will be a carrier frequency that is often >10x higher frequency than the modulated signal. Most garage door openers operate at either 315 or 390MHz. However, it appears that the antenna portion has broken off and could very well be the reason the remote no longer works. It's called a short whip and allows you to have the antenna much shorter than it would need to be otherwise. I'm pretty sure the penspring coil you are seeing is actually L1 in the linked reference design and used to have a whip antenna that was all part of the same wire. For reference, here is a pretty typical application curcuit.
